Remo group backs Ogun West, warns against zoning breach

A sociocultural group in Remoland, the Pan Remo Movement (PRM), has called for the governorship of Ogun State to shift to Ogun West in 2027, warning politicians from Remo against breaching the state’s zoning arrangement.
The group said Remo had produced two governors and occupied the governorship for 16 of the 28 years since the return to democratic rule in 1999, making it necessary for the zone to reciprocate the support it received from other parts of the state.
PRM made the position known in a statement signed by its President, Otunba ’Poju Akintayo-Ayodele, and General Secretary, Oloye Tunde Adekoya, amid growing political discussions over the 2027 governorship election.
The group specifically cited former Governor Gbenga Daniel and incumbent Governor Dapo Abiodun as governors produced by Remo, arguing that Ogun West, particularly Yewa, should be allowed to produce the next governor.
“We are not ingrates. Remo has had its fair share of the governorship,” the group said.
PRM recalled the support extended to Abiodun during the 2019 and 2023 elections, saying Remo should demonstrate political reciprocity by supporting the aspiration of other zones.
“We must therefore appreciate the support extended to us by other zones and be willing to support the legitimate aspiration of other parts of the state to also produce the governor,” it said.
The group urged Remo political leaders, traditional institutions and community stakeholders to place the long-term interests of the state above individual ambitions.
It warned that attempts to overturn what it described as an existing understanding on power rotation could damage political trust among Ogun’s major blocs.
“Those who deliberately work against this understanding may be sowing seeds of conflict and destruction for generations yet unborn,” PRM said.
The movement argued that the zoning debate should not be reduced to the ambition of individual aspirants but should be considered within the broader principles of equity, political accommodation and inclusion.
It maintained that Ogun West had yet to produce a governor since the creation of the state and deserved what it described as a fair opportunity to occupy the position.
PRM also announced plans to hold its 2026 Pan Remo Forum, which it said would focus on preserving goodwill and peaceful coexistence among the various political zones before, during and after the 2027 elections.
The group urged Remo stakeholders to consider the consequences of their political decisions on future relationships across Ogun State.
