The All Progressives Congress (APC) has lauded the Federal High Court judgment affirming Bello Matawalle as Zamfara Governor.
Sen.John Akpanudoedehe, National Secretary, APC Caretaker and Extra-ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) said this in a statement on Monday in Abuja.
“The development will undoubtedly buoy the Matawalle administration to continue to implement many socio-economic development plans for Zamfara as well as contribute towards efforts to tackle security challenges in the North West.
“On behalf of the National Chairman, of the APC CECPC, Gov. Mai Mala Buni, the party hails the judiciary for again defending the Constitution and the popular mandate of Matawalle as Zamfara Governor,” he said.
He said that the Federal High Court, Gusau Judicial Division while dismissing the suit challenging Matawalle’s position as governor of Zamfara upon his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, described the whole case as devoid of merit.
“The court held that there was no provision in the amended 1999 Constitution which state that a governor would lose his seat whenever he defects to another party other than the political party upon which he was elected.

“It also ruled that Matawalle had the right to assembly and association with respect to joining or belonging to a political party.
“In exercise of his right of freedom of association guaranteed under section 40 of the amended 1999 Constitution, he can defect to any party of his choice and still maintain his seat as the Governor of Zamfara,” Akpankudohede said.
