Award reflects ‘growing trust in public institutions’

By Femi Salako
The conferment of the Personality of the Year Award on the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, at the 2026 African Leadership Awards has been described as a reflection of growing public confidence in Nigeria’s institutions and reform-oriented governance.

The award, presented by Triangle International Magazine on April 2 at King’s College, London, underscores increasing recognition of efforts aimed at improving efficiency, accountability, and citizen-focused service delivery within key government agencies.

Within a relatively short period in office, Tunji-Ojo has become associated with policy implementation linked to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in areas covering immigration services, identity management, correctional administration, and civil defence operations.

Several agencies under the Ministry of Interior have introduced operational adjustments designed to reduce bureaucratic delays and improve coordination.

These measures are aimed at strengthening service delivery and improving the interaction between citizens and public institutions.

A major component of the reform process is the introduction of digital frameworks, including the Centralised Interior Management and Administration System, designed to improve inter-agency collaboration and streamline administrative procedures.

The initiative seeks to enhance processing timelines and expand access to essential government services.

Changes within the correctional system have also focused on rehabilitation initiatives, skills development programmes, and improved welfare conditions, with the objective of supporting reintegration and reducing recidivism.

In the area of security and civil defence, steps have been taken to strengthen operational capacity while also prioritising staff welfare and professional development.

These efforts are intended to improve effectiveness across agencies responsible for internal security support services.

Nigerians in the diaspora have also experienced adjustments in passport processing and identity services, with structured application systems aimed at reducing delays and improving accessibility to documentation services from abroad.

The recognition of Tunji-Ojo at the African Leadership Awards highlights ongoing administrative changes within Nigeria’s public sector, particularly initiatives directed at modernising systems and improving institutional responsiveness.

By naming Tunji-Ojo as Personality of the Year, Triangle International Magazine spotlighted reforms focused on service delivery, efficiency, and accountability across agencies under the Ministry of Interior.

The award is widely viewed as acknowledgement of continuing efforts to strengthen public institutions through improved processes, digital transformation, and enhanced service standards.
