Awolowo gave Yoruba safety net with free education – El-Rufai

Bashir El-Rufai, son of Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai has hailed late Nigerian leader, Chief Obafemi Awolowo for the free education program he provided for the Western region.

El-Rufai, in a tweet on Thursday, said that Awolowo’s legacy in Education was the reason the Yoruba become leaders wherever they go.

“What Awolowo did for the Yoruba regarding free, complusory, education has to be the most important & profound reason they are leaders wherever they go or venture or any other policy in our history undertaken by a statesman & Fouding Father. He gave his people that safety net,” he tweeted.

He also expressed concerns over the level of insecurity and poverty in the Northern region, describing its people as “most accommodating.”

“I admit, I don’t conceal it. I have a bias toward my people in the North. Firstlly my people deserve better. Many suffer from hunger or at the other end of a bandit’s rifle daily. But these are one of the most accomodating, honest & generous set of people. Our people persevere.

“I’m ethnocentric, depending on the definition & context, not with the intent of domination of others not Hausa or look down upon them as “less Nigerian“ than I am nor the goals & aspirations of other tribes or faiths.
I’m ethnocentric because i’m aware my people are far behind,” he tweeted.
