AFCON 2021: Dollar rains for Super Eagles

Three-time African champions, Super Eagles are $120,000 richer following their impressive run in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations Cup in Cameroon. This is outside their winning match bonus.

The 1994 champions posted a 100 percent record to finish tops in Group D with a maximum of nine points, scoring six and conceding a goal which was against Sudan.

For their impressive performance in the group stage, the players were rewarded with $120,000 (N49,794,210.92) by the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele for the six goals they scored, representing $20,000 for each goal scored.

While speaking with the players in Garoua, Emefiele said that the government and Nigerians are solidly behind the team and urged them to continue to make the nation proud, reminding the players that his promise of $20,000 for each goal they score in the competition still continues with the knock out matches.

Responding, Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa promised that he and his teammates will put in their all to ensure that they bring the AFCON trophy back to Nigeria.

“We’re determined and will do our best to win the trophy. I want to say we’re happy with the support from the government, NFF and all Nigerians. and we can only pay them back by winning the championship,” he said.
