Concerned Rivers people, PDP, APC leaders stage protest against LG poll

Concerned citizens of Rivers State have taken to the streets of Port Harcourt to call for an halt of the ongoing local government elections.
The protesters, who are also supporters of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Saturday, demanded that the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), to comply with a recent High Court judgment which asked the commission to suspend the election.
Torrents of the former Rivers State governor’s supporters were carrying placards with messages like “Obey Court Order” and “No Justice, No Election” to express their frustrations.
In its ruling earlier, the court stated that it found procedural flaws in the organization and scheduling of the elections.
Neglecting the order of the court, the organisation went ahead to schedule the elections, prompting Wike’s camp to call for a postponement.
Earlier, a suspected explosion rocked the secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) leading the caretaker committee chairman, CTC, Chief Tony Okocha, to accuse supporters of the Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara, of the attack.
“At the wee hours of Saturday (today), pro-Fubara civilian soldiers detonated dynamites at our office.
“The second attempt to set it ablaze was foiled as the security at the gate quickly put out the fire,” he wrote.
Meanwhile, the Police, citing court orders, have said they would not provide security services in Rivers for the election and urged other security agencies to do the same.
