First batch of Team Nigeria athletics contingent departs for Aberdeen Training Camp
The first batch of Team Nigeria’s track and field athletes and officials departed the country in the early hours of Friday 10th of July for the pre-Commonwealth Games training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland.
The contingent, made up of eight athletes and four officials, left the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at about 5:00 a.m. as preparations intensify for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
The athletes on the first flight are Patience Okon-George, Favour Ashe, Prestina Ochonogor, Chidera Ezeakor, Jennifer Obi, Esther Joseph, Blessing Ogundiran, and Adekalu Fakorede.
The officials accompanying the team are AFN Technical Director, Mr. Gabriel Okon, Olapade Lawal, Kolawale Patrick Esabunor Nukie, and Shaheed Akinpelu.
The Aberdeen training camp is expected to provide the athletes with the ideal environment to fine-tune their preparations ahead of the Commonwealth Games, with the remaining members of Team Nigeria expected to depart in subsequent batches.
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), in collaboration with the National Sports Commission (NSC), is optimistic that the early camping programme will enhance the athletes’ readiness and improve Nigeria’s chances of a successful outing at the Games.
