German president to visit western areas battling floods

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, on Friday, said would travel to the areas of western Germany batting historic flooding.

Steinmeier who described the floods and many deaths as a tragedy said he will get a picture of the situation on the ground and above all seek talks with first responders and those affected.

He said he was stunned by the situation and his thoughts were with the families mourning those they had lost, saying their situation touched his heart.

He called for tougher action to combat climate change and limit such extreme weather.

“For now, what matters is solidarity and rapid support for the flood victims.

“Our country stands together in this hour of need, only once the water recedes will the disaster’s true extent be evident,

“It is important that people in the flooded areas continue to receive support even when images of the disaster no longer dominate the news.

“Let’s not let down their hopes,’’ he said.
