Invest more in intelligence gathering, TUC tasks security agencies

Increased investment in intelligence gathering and spy policing will help to speedily overcome the present insecurity in the country, says an official. of Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC).
Mr Gbenga Ekundayo, Chairman, Lagos Chapter of TUC, said this in an interview with reporters on Thursday in Lagos.
“The key security outfits charged with combating this recent insecurity need to invest more in covert intelligence gathering operations and deploying spies to infiltrate the terrorists’ camps.
Bagudu tasks media on effective crime reporting
“I strongly believe that the Abuja-Kaduna train attack could not have happened if intelligence reports had exposed the plan beforehand.
“The insecurity in Nigeria today is very worrisome, disheartening and enough intelligence gathering for sure will make our security agencies prevail,’’ he said.
Ekundayo told NAN that the TUC lost two of its officers in the Abuja-Kaduna train attack.
“I use this opportunity to condole with the families of our Secretary-General, Mr Musa-Lawal Ozigi and Kwara Chapter Chairman, Mr Akin Akinsola, who were among those killed in the attack.
”Our hearts go to the families of these TUC officers and all the other innocent Nigerians that lost their lives in that sad event and other wanton killings across the country.
”These incidences are highly disheartening and they can be attributed to poor intelligence reporting,’’ he said.
He urged security agencies fighting to overcome the criminals terrorising Nigerians to deploy intelligence gathering, especially after such attacks have occurred before.
“TUC is currently formalising a political committee that will actively mobilise its members and Nigerians in general to elect credible political leaders.
”Unfortunately, our two comrades killed by the terrorists were on their way to inaugurate the political commission in the Northern part of Nigeria.
”This is the more reason it will be difficult to forget these our fallen comrades,” the chairman said. (NAN)
