IPAC describe DSS action on Interim government as embarrassment to intelligence management

David Lawani, Abuja
The Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee, IPAC, Yabagi Sani has described the action of the Department of State Service, DSS over the announcement that there are people who are calling for Interim government as an embassrrament saying such could further stock the tension in the country.

Sani made this assertion when he appeared on Channels Television Politics Today stating that since the intelligence agency knows the politicians who are making such unsavoury calls nothing stops them from inviting them for questions rather than further throwing the information on the citizens who lacks the power to do anything.

He maintained that making public announcements of such information doesn’t serve any purpose adding that it would have been better and safer for the DSS take an arrest and ask questions and where they Don not dind anything they release the person instead of making blanket statement that will not assist in resolving the brouhaha.

He said: ” To say the least, it is an embassrrament really because I believe the DSS are the agency in charge of gathering intelligence and passing it to other agencies that are supposed to take action. I don’t think it serve any purpose for the DSS to.come and make this procurement in the manner they are making it. What would have made sense to us is that so and so person is involved. So and so person has been arrested. Or he is under interrogation.

” What do we do as politicians? Or citizens of the country? We cannot do nothing. Nobody is above the law. Whoever the person is, if they know that whoever the person his is doing something untoward our democracy, that will scuttle this process, the sensible and lawful thing to do is to take the person to custody. Asking him questions.

” They could come out to say so and so person has been found to be this and we have asked questions and since we didn’t get anything he has been released. But to make this pronouncements to further create some kind of tension and crisis as if we are not in control doesn’t meet the requirements of what I believe”, he said.

On whether if arrest is done on key political figures, if that will not lead to more tension in the country rather than put the information out there in the open, he said: ” Each one has its own advantage and disadvantage. All I am saying is that don’t just take anybody and lock the person but it may serve the purpose of deterrent.

” I read in the report or the reporter that Daddi Ahmed said the president elect will not be sworn in. Are they talking of Datti Baba Ahmed? I don’t think the law enforcement agents should shy away from their responsibilities to demonstrate that nobody is above the law. That is the point I am.making.

” I know if you start arresting opposition politicians it will send a wrong signal that maybe it is witch-hunting. Look.at what happens in the US in January 6 when Trump wanted to interfere with the process of inauguration of Biden. Something happened and they took.action.

” I believed that as much as we commend the efforts of the DSS, I think they should go beyond that. Because as a citizen what can we do? We can only say maybe we are in trouble. This democracy is too precious and if there is anybody that should protect it, and advance it, it is the agencies that are put in.place to do just that.

” We have them.the police, DSS and even the presidency they have a role to play. Because every agencies we are talking about are under the presidency. So perhaps I don’t know maybe time has come for the president to say something”, he said.
