Lagos orders probe over viral video of sanitation officer allegedly taking bribe
The Lagos State Government has commenced disciplinary proceedings against an officer of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps following the circulation of a viral video that allegedly shows the official receiving a bribe from a member of the public.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the development in a post on X on Friday, describing the alleged conduct as inconsistent with the ethical standards and values of the agency.
“My attention has been drawn to a viral video allegedly showing an officer of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps receiving a bribe from a lawbreaker. Such conduct is unacceptable and runs contrary to the rules, ethics, and core values of the Agency,” Wahab said.
He disclosed that the officer had been issued a formal query and that a Personnel Management Board would be constituted to investigate the matter in line with the Lagos State Civil Service Rules and Regulations.
“Consequently, we have immediately issued the officer a query, and this will be followed by the constitution of a Personnel Management Board to investigate the matter,” the commissioner stated.
Reaffirming the state government’s stance against corruption, Wahab stressed that any officer found culpable would face sanctions prescribed by extant regulations.
“The Lagos State Government maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and any form of misconduct within its public service. Any officer found culpable will be subjected to the appropriate disciplinary measures as stipulated by the relevant regulations,” he added.
The commissioner also cautioned residents against attempting to induce public officials with illicit payments, noting that both the giving and receiving of bribes constitute offences under the law.
He urged Lagosians to comply with extant regulations and support efforts aimed at promoting accountability and public trust in government institutions.
