Nigerian leaders underrate role of entertainment in nation building, says Laide Bakare

Laide Bakare, the Senior Special Assistant to Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on Entertainment, Arts, Culture and Tourism, has decried that Nigerian political leaders underrate the role entertainment plays in nation-building.

According to the actress and filmmaker, those in leadership positions do not appreciate the entertainment industry, which has made collective growth in the nation difficult.

She, however, disclosed that she is gathering fresh ideas and building programs that will curb the underutilisation of Nollywood as a tool for economic growth.

She said, “We conducted our own research and discovered that the problem stems from those at the top. They tend to underrate the role of entertainment in national development. That is why we are coming up with fresh ideas and programs to change that narrative.”

Speaking further, Bakare described herself as a trailblazer in the political space, stating her commitment to bridging the gap between entertainment and governance.

“I am a game changer, and I’m changing the game in politics. Entertainment should never be downplayed, especially given its economic value and the opportunities it presents.

“It feels good and fulfilling. Years ago, when we were asked where we saw ourselves in five to eight years, this was the vision. It’s happening now, and I’m really thankful,” she added.
