Mixed reactions have continued to trail the recitation of the old national anthem by activist, Aisha Yesufu, in a video she posted on X on Monday.
The activist captioned the video, “Good Morning To The Free Nigerians Born Of Free Men And Women”.
Recall that Yesufu recently sparked a heated debate after she refused to stand during the singing of Nigeria’s new national anthem, “Nigeria We Hail Thee,” at an event.
She shared a video of her protest on X with the hashtag #NotMyNationalAnthem, igniting a wave of reactions across social media.
In a 1:57-long video, the activist recited the first and second stanzas of the old anthem and ended the video with the pledge.
However, her act has generated diverse reactions from netizens. While some applauded her, others knocked the activist.

A user, Adeleke, wrote, “If Nigeria is a sane country, you should be in jail by now. It is just a matter of time, you have your space reserved.”
But Adeleke was countered by another user, DY, who queried the basis of her arrest saying, “I’m not a fan of hers but I don’t think this deserved any jail time of any type. Civil disobedience but completely legal. She has a point too. Now is not the time to be changing anthems.”
Chima Echefule wrote, “This is only national anthem, any other illegal slavery anthem is not mine. Thank you @AishaYesufu.”
For Johnson Agiriga, “The words of the national anthem means nothing to the drug baron and his followers who subvert a democratic process to rig elections. Changing national anthem is not the priority of Nigerians now.”
“How do you explain this woman’s behaviour to her family member? Must be hard on them,” Mr Eniola queried on X.
