The United Kingdom has added Nigeria to its red list as part of measures to curb the spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19.

The announcement was made in a travel advisory posted on the UK government website on Saturday.

“From 0400 on Monday 6 December, Nigeria will be added to the red list for entering England,” a travel advisory on the UK government website also read.

UK Health Secretary, Sajid Javid also confirmed development and added that it would be temporary.

“Following the latest development, all international arrivals to the UK will now be required to take pre-departure COVID-19 tests.

“The change starts from 4:00am on Monday.

“Nigeria is second only to South Africa for cases linked to Omicron.

“There are 27 cases already in England and that’s growing.

“The measures are hugely unfortunate for people who already had travel plans, but they would be temporary.

“We want to remove them as soon as we possibly can. Vaccines remain our first line of defence,” Javid said.
