One suspect killed as gunmen attack NIPSS again

Security personnel at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, in Plateau State, on Wednesday night foiled an attempted attack by suspected gunmen, killing one of the assailants during a gunfight.
The incident, which occurred at about 11 p.m., involved armed men who allegedly tried to infiltrate the institute through its security perimeter before they were confronted by security operatives.
The institute disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday by its Head of Public Affairs, Dr. Osime Samuel.
According to the statement, the attackers exchanged gunfire with security personnel but were forced to flee after a coordinated response by the security team.
“The National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, wishes to inform the public that another attempt by unidentified armed assailants to breach the Institute’s security perimeter was successfully repelled by security personnel late yesterday night, Wednesday, July 1, 2026,” the statement said.
It added, “The attackers engaged security operatives in a gun duel but were forced to retreat following the swift and coordinated response of the security forces. One of the assailants was neutralised during the encounter, while others were reported to have escaped with varying degrees of injuries.”
The institute said the operation prevented the attackers from gaining access to its premises, stressing that all participants, staff, residents and facilities remained unharmed.
“There was no breach of the security perimeter. All participants, staff, residents and Institute facilities remain safe and secure,” the statement added.
It further disclosed that security agencies had launched efforts to track down the fleeing suspects while surveillance and other preventive security measures had been strengthened within and around the institute.
NIPSS also reassured participants, employees, their families and members of the public of its commitment to protecting lives and property, urging residents to ignore unverified reports capable of causing unnecessary panic.
The latest attack comes less than two weeks after suspected gunmen invaded the institute and parts of the surrounding community.
During the earlier incident, three persons, including security personnel, were killed, leading to increased deployment of security operatives and tighter surveillance around Nigeria’s foremost policy and leadership training institution.
