The Akwa Ibom chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) conducted its local government primary elections on Monday. This is ahead of the October 31 local government elections in the state.
Across the State, the elections were peaceful except in Ibiono Ibom and Nsit Atai.
In Ibiono Ibom, there was an incumbent senator who came to announce at the venue of the election that the only candidate was the incumbent Chairman and his vice remained. He had been pushing for a consensus candidate and he made this announcement at the Christ the Kings School located at Wellington Bassey Way, Uyo. The delegates insisted on an election and vowed to resist any imposition from anyone.
In Nsit Atai, confusion tried to rear its head when it was announced that Mark Esset, the member representing the constituency in the State House of Assembly, was abducted. The incumbent Chairman, also an aspirant, debunked the rumour explaining it as a ploy by detractors to create fear.
Hon. Udo Ekpenyong, the Party-State Chairman, had announced the party plans to conduct a peaceful and transparent election, saying the party had met all the requirements necessary for peaceful and orderly congresses. He further said that due process was followed in line with the Party’s constitution.
