NYSC DG warns corps members against relying on single income

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has advised corps members to develop multiple sources of income, warning that relying on one may not be enough to meet their daily needs.

Nafiu gave the advice while addressing members of the 2026 Batch C Stream One at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Anambra State.

According to a statement shared on the scheme’s official X handle on Monday, he urged the corps members to use their service year to acquire practical skills, develop entrepreneurial abilities and explore legitimate opportunities to improve their finances.

He encouraged them to build useful professional relationships, identify business opportunities and consider long-term investments as part of their financial plans.

“Open your eyes, make friends and leverage comparative advantage. Buy shares for long-term investments,” he said.

The NYSC boss also urged the corps members to embrace diligence and learn as many skills as possible while they were still young, stressing the importance of preparing for life after the mandatory national service.

Beyond financial independence, Nafiu called on them to contribute meaningfully to their host communities and take pride in the teaching profession by sharing knowledge with residents in their places of primary assignment.

Meanwhile, the NYSC Anambra State Coordinator, Mrs Pauline Ojisua, disclosed that 1,623 corps members had registered for the orientation exercise.

She said the corps members had demonstrated discipline, cooperation and commitment by volunteering to serve on various committees and helping to ensure the smooth running of camp activities.

Ojisua appreciated the director-general for visiting the camp, describing his presence as a source of encouragement to corps members and camp officials.
