Wike celebrates victorious Rivers Angels

By Emma Obe
Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has praised the Rivers Angels Football Club of Port Harcourt for winning this year’s National Women Football after beating high flying Sunshine Queens of Akure by 4-0 at Ijebu-Ode on Sunday.

Wike said he felt so happy when he received the news of the triumph of the Port Harcourt side. “The Government and people of Rivers State congratulate Rivers Angels for emerging as worthy winners of the 2021 NWFL Premiership Super Six. We applaud your spirited performance throughout this season,” he said in a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Kelvin Ebiri.

“This is not just an honour to Rivers State alone, but to our country which you will be representing in the prestigious CAF Women’s Champions League later this year. Rivers people are delighted by your incredible achievement.”

The governor said Rivers Angels’ ability to retain the NWFL title was a testimony to all the hard work the team and its management put in throughout the season to achieve another magnificent season of winning.

Wike charged the management and coaching crew of the club to begin to immediately prepare the club for the upcoming CAF Women’s Champions League, whose trophy, he said he would be expecting in Port Harcourt.

“You have made every one of us in Rivers State and the nation glad. We, sincerely pray that this achievement will spur you to strive for a more prominent continental accomplishment. You have conquered the Nigerian football league, now go and conquer the African continent,” the governor said.

The governor had promised to give N20 million to the Rivers United FC earlier in the year if they won any away match. But the club had continued to falter after that offer.
