Reps Deny Asking FRSC To Bear Arms
By Kassim Omomia

The House of Representatives has denied ever asking or canvassing that the Federal Roads Safety Corps should carry arms henceforth
Chairman of the House Committee on FRSC Hon. Mayowa Akinfolarin, made the denial in a statement he personally signed
Hon Akinfolarin noted that at no point did it make such proposals or canvassed such position because as a committee it even lacked such powers
He said “The House Committee on FRSC hereby states unequivocally that at no time did it canvass the bearing of arms by the Federal Road Safety Corps.
“The committee has not and will not mandate the Corps to bear arms because it lacks such powers” he reiterated.
He explained that at its budget defense meeting last week, the FRSC Corps Marshall reeled out staggering statistics on the number of officers attacked kidnapped or killed on the roads by hoodlums.
“As a responsive and responsible committee, it agreed that a step must be taken to put an end to such occurrences” he added and thereafter resolved to interface with the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation through a sub committee to fashion out ways of putting an end to the sad development.
The Road Safe Commission Establishment Act empowers those at risk when carrying out their functions to carry fire arms.
But it therefore holds that no committee of the National Assembly can change this Act , except through amendment , which must be discussed by the whole parliament and must be subjected to input from members of the public through a public hearing.
The committee, however, said it was most shocking to read in the media that the Committee wants the corps to bear firearms.
According to Chairman , “Our major concern as a committee is how to ensure the safety of every law abiding citizens on the roads, including security officials and that is why we chose to liaise with the office of the SGF and other relevant bodies through our sub committee” he further noted.
