School of Nursing, Midwifery is 95% completed in Edo, Obaseki says

Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo says the School of Nursing and Midwifery is about 95 percent completed in the state.

Obaseki, who led other government officials on an inspection tour of the schools, on Thursday in Benin, expressed delight at the level of the work done.

He said that the accreditation team would visit the site this weekend.

“This work is 95 percent ready; we expect that before the end of the month, it will be fully ready.

“Also by the middle of November, we would have received full accreditation, and students who have gotten the admission process will resume.

“Rebuilding the nursing school to international standard has become key for this administration; it has translated to what you see here today.

“We are here for pre-accreditation visits as the accreditation team will be here this weekend and am here today to see things for me to ensure it’s ready for the team to inspect.

“Staff has been recruited and work on the physical structure is on equipment for the demonstration laboratory has been purchased and by the weekend all of these will be installed.

“My administration is not one that commissions projects but builds projects for the people to utilize it. We don’t make noise about our project but the people should be the ones to commission the projects themselves.

“We will continue to make improvements in our human capacity development. As a government, we will continue to build human capacity of our people.

“We have the requisite human resources as we have more than 5,000 doctors within 50-mile radius of Benin. It’s not the human capacity but facilities.

“We are talking to investors that want to build another mother and child hospital and state of the arts diagnostic center is also coming in there,’’ he said.

Edo to upgrade school of nursing, midwifery to college of nursing sciences

Obaseki said all the development in the healthcare sector had become necessary as the COVID-19 pandemic last year exposed how weak the healthcare system was in the state and country at large.

The pandemic has unraveled the weakness of our healthcare system and it has prompted our administration to focus on the system.

On her part, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Obehi Akoria, said that healthcare was about teamwork that comprised nurses, doctors, pharmacists among others.

Akoria said the state-of-the-art facility would surely boost human capacity development and ensure the needed change in the healthcare system in Edo.
