Bayelsa orders work-free day, market closure ahead of Tinubu’s visit

The Bayelsa State Government has declared a public holiday and directed the temporary closure of markets in preparation for the visit of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The announcement was made on Thursday in Yenagoa by the Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, who said the measures were aimed at ensuring full participation of residents in activities lined up for the President’s one-day trip.
According to her, the state has concluded arrangements to host the President, describing the visit as significant for Bayelsa and an opportunity for citizens to engage with national leadership.
She explained that the work-free day, scheduled for Friday, April 10, 2026, would allow civil servants, traders, and other residents to turn out in large numbers for the event.
During the visit, Tinubu is expected to commission several major infrastructure projects, including a state-owned gas turbine facility at Opolo-Elebele, a 60-kilometre dual carriageway stretching from Onopa to the LNG corridor, and a 630-metre bridge connecting Angiama to Oporoma in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.
The government also urged traders and business owners to comply with the directive to shut markets temporarily, noting that the decision was part of broader efforts to guarantee a hitch-free and well-coordinated visit.
Officials say the projects slated for inauguration are key to boosting connectivity, energy supply, and economic development in the state.
