Theo Abu defends appointment as NDC’s communications director

The newly appointed Director of New Media and Strategic Communications of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Theo Abu, has defended his appointment and outlined his vision for the party’s digital strategy in a statement issued on Thursday.
Abu expressed gratitude to the National Leader of the party, Henry Seriake Dickson, describing him as his “leader, boss, and father” for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the party’s communications architecture.
He said his association with Dickson and the NDC was driven by long-standing ideological alignment, particularly on restructuring and devolution of powers, which he described as key to transforming Nigeria’s governance system.
Abu stated that his support for the party began at its formative stage, insisting he was part of its foundational structure and contributed to its early mobilisation before it gained wider national attention.
He dismissed suggestions that his appointment was politically opportunistic, insisting he was not motivated by financial or personal gain, adding that he is “stable and fulfilled” in his personal life.
According to him, his decision to serve was based on conviction and a desire to contribute to national development through political engagement at the party level.
Drawing from his experience in civil society and media, Abu said he intends to deploy his expertise to strengthen the NDC’s communication strategy and position it as a credible political alternative ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He acknowledged that his appointment had generated mixed reactions but assured supporters that he remains committed to the party’s growth and electoral success.
Abu pledged to focus on promoting party candidates, countering misinformation, shaping national discourse, and advancing the ideological vision of the NDC leadership.
He stressed the need for unity within the party, urging members to rise above internal disagreements and remain focused on the broader objective of electoral victory in 2027.
“At this critical juncture in our nation’s history, we must rise above trivial distractions and remain focused on our collective vision for a better Nigeria,” he said.
Abu also thanked Nigerians for their reactions to his appointment, noting that he was humbled by the level of support and solidarity extended to him, including from individuals outside his political affiliation.
Reaffirming loyalty to the party, he declared full support for the NDC, its National Leader Dickson, and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi and vice presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, ahead of the 2027 elections.
He concluded that the party’s communication strategy would be driven by discipline and structure, insisting that “information is power” and must be deployed strategically to achieve electoral success.
