UNIZIK begins probe as female student bites lecturer, NANS condemns act

By Cajetan Mmuta, Awka

The Acting Vice Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (NUA), Professor Joseph Ikechebelu, yesterday, assured that the institution has commenced investigation into an alleged assault on a male lecturer by a female student.

This came as leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS)  yesterday condemned the  assault by a student who physically attacked a lecturer over a TikTok recording.

In a statement issued in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, NANS Senate President, Babatunde Akinteye, reaffirmed the association’s commitment to advocating for students’ rights while upholding discipline, respect for authority, and adherence to institutional regulations.
He stressed that acts of violence and misconduct have no place in academic institutions nationwide, urging students to respect constituted authorities.

A viral video had shown a third year student, Miss Chimamaka Precious Goddy-Mbakwe of Department of History and International Studies dragging Dr Chukwudi Okoye, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre Art and Film Studies for allegedly dragging her phone.

The acting Vice Vice challenge, while reacting to the trending video in a statement signed by the Acting Head of Information, Public Relations and Protocol, Mr Louis Njelita, assured that the investigation would adhere to principle of fair hearing.

“In line with our core values of discipline, self-reliance, and excellence, and in adherence to the principles of fair hearing, equity and justice, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph Ikechebelu has ordered a full scale, transparent and unbiased investigation into the matter.”

“The incident which has gained significant attention on social media, is being taken very seriously by the University authorities. We urge all concerned parties and members of the public to remain calm as we diligently pursue the truth.

The university is committed to upholding discipline and decorum, and we will ensure that appropriate action and sanctions are taken based on the outcome of the investigation.”

“Nnamdi Azikiwe University remains an institution of learning that upholds high moral and ethical standards. There is no place for indiscipline, misconduct or any form of unacceptable behaviour within our community,” the statement added.

Akinteye stated, “NANS has always been at the forefront of advocating for students’ rights, academic freedom, and a conducive learning environment. However, we equally uphold discipline, respect for authority, and adherence to the laws governing our institutions. It is in this light that we strongly condemn the reported incident at UNIZIK, where a student physically assaulted a lecturer over a TikTok recording.”
He described such behaviour as unacceptable, stressing that academic institutions are citadels of learning built on mutual respect between students and lecturers.
“While students have the right to self-expression, including the use of social media, such rights must be exercised with decorum, responsibility, and respect for others. The reported action of the student is an embarrassment to the student body and does not represent the values of the Nigerian student community.”
Akinteye reiterated that while NANS remains committed to protecting students’ rights and welfare, it would not support any student who violates the law, disrespects lecturers, or engages in actions that tarnish the image of the academic community.”
He stressed that NANS stands for responsible student leadership and discipline and will not hesitate to call out actions that contradict these principles.
“In light of this incident, we call on the management of UNIZIK to conduct a thorough and unbiased investigation to establish the facts of the case. Due diligence must be observed, and all parties involved should be given a fair hearing. However, if the student is found guilty, appropriate sanctions should be applied in line with the institution’s regulations to serve as a deterrent to others,” Akinteye added.
He maintained that the academic environment must be preserved as a space for respect, learning, and professional engagement.
