Vigilante commander arrested for torturing female police officer in Anambra

Police in Anambra State have arrested a commander of the state VIgilante services in Nnobi in Idemili South local government area for allegedly torturing a female police officer attached to the state command.

The suspect was said to have after torturing the police officer made a video of the act which trended in the social media on Wednesday.

In the said video the vigilante commander was seen harassing the policewoman while torturing her.

But irked by the act of humiliation, commissioner of police in the state, Mr. Echeng Eworo Echeng immediately on Saturday ordered operatives of the command to fish out the perpetrator which led to his arrest.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Ikenga Tochukwu who confirmed the incident said CP Echeng Eworo had upon seeing the trending vidoe quickly gone to work, and the incident was found to have happened at Nnobi, and the vigilante commander involved had been arrested.

He said: “The Commissioner of Police Anambra State Command, CP Echeng Echeng today (Saturday, 15th of January 2022) wishes to inform the general public, especially Ndi Anambra that the Commander of Anambra State Vigilante  alleged to be torturing a female police officer on 12th January 2022 at Awuda Nnobi security office, is now in custody.”

Ikenga explained that “Following as seen on a trending video on social media, where some members of the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG), were seen harassing and torturing a female in their office at Awuda Nnobi. The CP ordered the immediate arrest of the commander and investigation has since commenced.

“The CP while describing the act as cowardly assures that the command is always ready in protecting the women against violence, even when the person is not of the security community.”

“He (Echeng Echeng) also thanked the members of the public, especially Ndi Anambra for their advocacy in condemning the act and protecting the female gender.”
