Wahab faults alleged AI-generated flood video, urges responsible use of social media

The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has cautioned against the alleged circulation of AI-generated videos.

The commissioner stated that the practice misleads the public and undermines efforts by the state government to monitor and respond to flooding incidents.

Wahab made the remark on Tuesday while reacting to a social media post by a user identified as Balogun, who shared a video showing three exotic cars almost submerged in what was claimed to be floodwater in Lagos.

The post was accompanied by the caption, “Just take a look at those high class cars.”

Responding, the commissioner described the video as AI-generated and accused its creator of using manipulated content to push a particular narrative.

He said using artificially generated videos to promote an agenda was neither responsible nor in the public interest, stressing that the government depends on information shared across various platforms to track incidents and coordinate emergency responses across the state.

According to him, the deliberate circulation of manipulated or AI-generated content hampers those efforts and is unfair to residents who have been genuinely affected by flooding.

Wahab urged members of the public to verify information before sharing it, noting that everyone has a responsibility to ensure that materials circulated online are accurate and do not mislead the public.

He also appealed to social media users to refrain from creating or spreading misleading content merely to attract attention or boost engagement.

The commissioner called on residents to act responsibly and support efforts aimed at protecting the interests of Lagos State through the dissemination of factual and credible information.
