What has changed about policemen since EndSARS was banned one year ago?

Ibrahim Kwaha ICT consultant
Nothing has changed since last year, they are still the same. The police have not learnt their lessons, they are still the way they are. From the memorial yesterday, you can see that the police were still mishandling the protesters.

The police brutality is there, you can see those even journalists were harassed by the police for covering the event and how they mishandled protesters. If their doings are right, they won’t be scared of a journalist covering the event.

They will allow the reporters to do their work, but because they are fully aware that they are unjust and all, they decided to harass some of the journalists in the scene. It is quite unfortunate for us as a country.

Well, it is not about what has changed, the main thing we should be concerned about in this country is peace. The structure must continue until we see the change that they have promised us. Change is constant. One day the policemen will change and start to reason like the civilized average Nigerians.

Even if changes have occurred, we might not notice because it will be very little and we the Nigerian youths have already focused on the fact that the Nigerian police are bad people and are full of brutality.

I will advise the Nigerian youths, to change their mindset and move forward because surely they will change, it might not be now but they will. I advocate for change in this country, when this country becomes a better place, our youth will stop moving to European countries for greener pastures.

Some of the youth even move to other poor countries just to have peace of mind which is quite unfortunate. Our struggle for change must continue, if not our children will suffer it.

The Nigeria Police Force was established in 1820. But over the years it has gone through many stages that included restructuring, reformation, and re-organisation.

So, in 1930 the Northern Nigerian Police and its southern counterpart were combined. In 1960, after Nigeria’s independence, the force became a national security outfit. The police are the closest security outfit to people.

As I talk to you, despite the security challenges we are facing and our growing population, (estimated to be 220 million), the NPF has about 370, 000 personnel. The UN recommended that there should be 100, 000 population per police officer.

I don’t think most has changed in terms of the psyche and character of the personnel. For st of all the SARS outfits are part of the NPF, when you disband it, you are not sacking the officers but just changing their area of operation. So, what we did was just to push them to another place where they will continue perpetuating what they were doing in SARS.

Much needs to be done in terms of manpower, training, and retraining to change the psyche and character of the Nigerian Police.

Nothing has changed in Nigeria, not even the citizens, no change. Everything is still the same, the police are still brutal and irresponsible in carrying out their duties.

People are still complaining about how they are being treated by the police. First off, after the protest last year, the police were calm and stable in some areas.

To the extent that when citizens are fighting, they don’t interfere. But after a while, they went back to the same default setting. I think I will advise the Nigeria Police Academy that in their recruitment, they should enroll most of the policemen who would be attending and solving issues on the roadside, how to manage anger, how to investigate citizens without being brutal. And there should be punishment for policemen who indulge in misconduct and brutality.

The reason why most of them are confident in their approach is that they know, there is no punishment for their actions which is very bad.

Well to me, ever since they have banned SARS nothing has changed because people are still harassed and molested every day.

You can also see from news and also social media how a man was treated during the End SARS Memorial. He was arrested and brutalized and damaged his eyes. That is not fair, does it look like they have learned their lessons, why would you treat humans as an animal.

Everybody has the right to idolise and appreciate those people that fell during the protest. These people didn’t come out to create anything, it is just one-year remembrance of the fallen heroes and still, they want to deprive them of that.

So nothing has changed if you ask many people you will hear that nothing has changed and you will hear their side of the story.
