Dangote Refinery exposes FUTO students to industrial excellence

By Francis Ajuonuma

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has hosted a delegation of outstanding students from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), offering them a rare opportunity to experience operations at Africa’s largest refinery and one of the world’s most advanced industrial complexes.

The visit was in fulfilment of a commitment made by Aliko Dangote, President and Chief Executive of Dangote Industries Limited, during FUTO’s 37th Public Lecture, where he pledged to expose exceptional students to world-class industrial facilities and practical learning opportunities.

The delegation, led by FUTO Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nnenna Oti, comprised high-performing students drawn from engineering, technology and entrepreneurship-related disciplines.

Speaking during an interactive session with the students, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals, David Bird, said the facility represents the possibilities achievable through innovation, technology, and private-sector investment.

“There is no better showcase of modern technology than the refinery that Alhaji Aliko Dangote has built here. What we have created is one of the world’s youngest, most modern, energy-efficient and highly automated refineries,” Bird said.

According to him, exposing young Nigerians to large-scale industrial operations is essential to preparing the next generation of engineers, innovators and industry leaders.

He noted that the refinery not only produces cleaner fuels but also demonstrates Africa’s growing capacity to execute complex engineering projects that can compete globally.

Bird disclosed that the company intends to strengthen collaboration with universities and research institutions, particularly in emerging areas such as renewable energy, sustainable fuels and innovative energy technologies.

“Our objective is to stay closely aligned with universities, understand the research they are undertaking and identify opportunities to support the commercialisation of innovative ideas,” he said.

In her remarks, Prof. Oti described the visit as a transformational learning experience that would help bridge the gap between academic training and industrial practice.

She recalled that Dangote personally invited the students following his lecture at the university earlier in the year.

“At the end of his lecture, he invited 15 female and 15 male students to visit his refinery and factories in Lagos. Today is the fulfilment of that promise,” she said.

The Vice-Chancellor said the exposure would broaden the students’ perspectives and provide practical insights that could shape their future careers.

“This is what I describe as an Ivory Tower-Industry Partnership. There is no better way to bridge the gap between theory and practice than exposing students to facilities of this scale,” she added.

Some of the students described the tour as enlightening, saying it enabled them to see firsthand the practical application of concepts they had previously studied in classrooms.

A 500-level Mechanical Engineering student, Amadi Ijeoma Winfrey, said the experience had strengthened her understanding of engineering systems and industrial processes.

“The experience has been amazing. Seeing the practical application of equipment such as pumps, compressors and turbines has helped bridge the gap between theory and reality,” she said.

Similarly, a 500-level Chemical Engineering student, Israel Ifanyichukwu, said the visit provided valuable exposure to industrial operations and enhanced his understanding of how engineering principles are applied at scale.

Officials of the university, including Director of the Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies, Prof. Abraham Ngwuta, and Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Chikwendu Emenike Orji, commended Dangote’s contributions to industrialisation and youth development.

They described the refinery as a practical example of how entrepreneurship, innovation and long-term investment can drive economic transformation, create jobs and stimulate national development.

The educational tour forms part of Dangote Industries’ broader commitment to promoting skills development, innovation and knowledge transfer, while preparing a new generation of professionals capable of supporting Africa’s industrial growth and economic transformation.
