Fresh Benue attack: Gov Alia calls killings barbaric, unacceptable

By Seyi Odewale

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has condemned a fresh attack in Gwer-East Local Government Area that left nine people dead.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, the governor described the incident as barbaric and unacceptable, calling it a direct affront to the state’s peace and security.

“The Governor expresses deep sympathy to the families affected and assures them that the government stands firmly with them during this difficult time,” the statement read.

Alia expressed concern about what appears to be a pattern of calculated, selective attacks in parts of the state. He stressed that such acts of terror, though increasingly complex in nature, will not be allowed to thrive.

The governor reiterated his administration’s resolve to confront and subdue all forms of criminality threatening Benue communities. He also commended security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police Force, for their swift response, noting that they are pursuing the perpetrators to ensure arrest and prosecution.

He urged security operatives to intensify operations to prevent further attacks and bring lasting relief to affected communities.

Confirming the attack to Channels Television on Sunday, the Chairman of Gwer LGA, Timothy Adi, said the attackers stormed the Mbalom-Mbatsada-Agana community between 5 and 6 p.m. on Holy Saturday. One person was critically injured and is receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

Adi added that there had been prior security alerts warning of a possible attack and that the state Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Enemari, visited the area to assess the situation and deploy personnel to restore peace.

He said the community is currently calm following the intervention of security operatives.
