INEC to head to Supreme Court over Deregistration of Parties

In a statement signed by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) spokesperson, Festus Okoye, on Monday, the Commission has said it will head to the Supreme Court on whether it has the power to deregister political parties.
The Court of Appeal voided the deregistration of 22 political parties even though INEC has the power, in line with the constitution.
The issue is if the Commission carried out the deregistration in line with the procedure outlined.
“Faced with two conflicting judgements from the same Court, the Commission is not in a position to pick and choose which one of them to obey. Consequently, the Commission will approach the Supreme Court for a final resolution of the issues raised in the two conflicting judgements,” Okoye said.
