A member of Nigerian delegation to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Parliament, Senator Abiodun Christine Olujimi, said,
there is need to look at insurgency and insecurity in West African region, noting that “insurgency is getting increasingly worse, it is not getting any better”.
Sen. Olujimi, who said this in a chat with ThisNigeria, in Abuja, counseled that “Nigeria should provide leadership, with which we can look at this region and see how we can take out insecurity, 60 percent, so that people will be free to move”.
Other thing, she said, is the free movement issue, free movement has cost most of the nations grief, adding, people who come for untoward businesses, as well as bandits coming in.
“We need to regularize movement of people so that we can get benefit from them. I think that government should really look into all this issues and bring them unto front burner so that ECOWAS can find a footing it is looking for and be like the EU,” she further counseled.
Sen. Olujimi, who represented Ekiti South Federal Constituency at the 9th Senate, said, West Africa should not have this coming together without finding value out of it.
She noted that there is a need to have a committee to look at various issues and ensure that ECOWAS is properly grounded.
“This is a large comity of nations that is envied all over the world, we should make it better by ensuring that what we say here takes root in the various nations,” she concluded.
