Kelvins blasts Rohr over Ighalo’s recall to Super Eagles

By Babs Oyetoro
Ex-international Yinka Kelvins has warned the Super Eagles manager, Gernot Rohr, to desist from any action that can cause an unnecessary distraction to the team ahead of the World Cup qualifiers.

Kelvins observed that Rohr’s purported plan to recall Odion Ighalo, who retired from international duty in 2019 can cause an unnecessary distraction to the team despite the array of attacking talents in the squad.

It would be recalled that Ighalo called time on his Super Eagles career after finishing as the top scorer and helping Nigeria to win bronze at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

The former Kogi United gaffer noted that since Ighalo announced his retirement, Osimhen has stepped in to replace him, stressing that the Napoli striker had made tremendous contributions to the team; scoring six goals in ten games played so far.
He continued: “Osimhen is not the only option available to Rohr, with the likes of Paul Onuachu, Sadiq Umar, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Simy Nwankwo showcasing their worth this season. I don’t think that he needs a striker again in that team.”

“I do not think this man knows what he is saying. From the look of things, the team needs to beef up the defence and get a creative midfielder that can turn the game around when the going gets tough. The Super Eagles do not need a striker again,’’ the former Union Bank coach added.

Meanwhile, Rohr had opined that Ighalo’s return would provide the needed experience for the young players in the team.

“When you look at the age of all the players that you speak about, they are all young, and we need experience.
