NDLEA destroys 36 hectares of suspected cannabis farms in Delta

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency says its operatives destroyed 36.2 hectares of suspected cannabis plantations and confiscated illicit drugs valued at about ₦450 million across Delta State between June 2025 and June 2026.

Disclosing the figures on Wednesday, the agency’s spokesman in the state, John-Kennedy Edoziem, said the seizures included suspected cannabis, tramadol, methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin and other controlled substances.

According to him, a total of 1,759.9 kilograms of solid narcotics and 10,596.6 litres of liquid exhibits were recovered during the period.

He stated that anti-narcotics operatives destroyed plantations covering 10.2 hectares in Emu-Obiogo, 11 hectares in Obiaruku and 15 hectares in Orogun, bringing the total area cleared to 36.2 hectares.

Edoziem added that officers raided a warehouse at Oko Market in Asaba where drugs with an estimated street value of more than ₦150 million were recovered, while two commercial buses conveying illicit substances worth over ₦300 million were intercepted on the Onitsha–Asaba Expressway.

The spokesman further disclosed that the command secured 235 convictions within the review period, with 204 cases still pending before the Federal High Court divisions in Asaba and Warri. He added that 623 drug users received counselling, while 14 others completed rehabilitation programmes.

He said the state commander, Halilu Hamidu, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to curbing both the supply and demand of illicit drugs through sustained enforcement and collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

“We shall continue to work closely with all stakeholders to build communities where drugs are more difficult to access, distribute, and less attractive to potential users,” Mr Edoziem said.
