Troops of the Nigerian Army, working alongside other security agencies, have arrested 46 foreign nationals suspected of residing illegally in Ogun State following a coordinated intelligence-led operation across several communities in the state.

The operation, which began on June 11, targeted locations in Ijebu Imushin, Ijebu Ilese and adjoining settlements, leading to the apprehension of the suspects during security sweeps aimed at identifying undocumented migrants and other potential security threats.

A breakdown of those arrested showed that 18 are nationals of Burkina Faso, 23 are citizens of Côte d’Ivoire, 4 are from Togo, and 1 is a Senegalese national. The group comprises 36 men and 10 women.

The arrests were confirmed on Sunday by Major Idereghi Samuel-Akari, Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala, Abeokuta.

According to the Army spokesman, preliminary investigations indicated that the suspects had lived in Ogun State for about six months without valid immigration documents required under Nigerian law.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the individuals had been residing in the state for approximately six months without valid immigration documentation,” Samuel-Akari stated.

The Army said initial interrogations revealed that the suspects claimed to be traders and workers linked to QNet, an online marketing platform involved in the sale and distribution of various products.

Security sources said investigators are working to determine the nature of the group’s activities, the circumstances surrounding their entry into Nigeria and whether any immigration or other laws were violated.

Following their arrest, the suspects were transferred to the Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) for further investigation and possible administrative or legal action.

The operation highlights growing concerns among security agencies over undocumented migration and the movement of foreign nationals across border corridors into different parts of the country.

Reacting to the operation, Commander of the 35 Artillery Brigade, Brigadier General Friday Oguche Onu, praised the troops and collaborating security agencies for what he described as a professional and successful operation.

He also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and support security efforts by reporting suspicious movements and unfamiliar persons within their communities.

“The successful operation underscores the commitment of the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to combating illegal migration, enhancing internal security, and safeguarding national interests,” the Army said.

The latest arrests come amid intensified efforts by security agencies to strengthen internal security, monitor irregular migration and disrupt activities considered capable of undermining public safety across the country.
