Insecurity: Oyo CAN issues fresh security guidelines for churches

The Oyo State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has introduced new security measures for churches across the state, urging them to take proactive steps against the growing threat of kidnapping and abduction.
The directive was contained in a communiqué released on Wednesday in Ibadan and signed by the state CAN Chairman, Rev. Elisha Ogundiya, and Secretary, Very Rev. Samuel Owolabi.
The association advised churches to enhance security around their premises through the deployment of trained personnel and the installation of surveillance equipment. It also recommended the suspension of late-night physical programmes until the security situation improves.
“Due to the increasing cases of abduction and kidnapping, churches should be more security-conscious by strategically deploying security personnel and relevant electronic devices within their premises and surrounding areas. Churches should also intensify prayers for the release of victims and suspend late physical activities in view of the prevailing security challenges,” the communiqué stated.
CAN further urged churches that are yet to erect fences or gates around their premises to make such projects a priority.
The association stressed the need for church leaders to engage competent security personnel, particularly during worship services and other gatherings. It also called for security assessments of guards and workers employed in critical roles within church premises.
In addition, churches were cautioned against allowing strangers to sleep within their sanctuaries or church compounds.
The body advised residents of the state to minimise unnecessary travel and avoid late-night journeys. It also encouraged strict compliance with the Oyo State Government’s directive prohibiting commercial motorcycle operations after 10:30 p.m.
Expressing concern over the current security situation in the state, CAN sympathised with families of persons still being held by kidnappers and acknowledged ongoing efforts by both the state and federal governments to secure their release, particularly victims of the recent incident in Orire Local Government Area.
The association called on authorities to expedite action toward freeing the abductees and reuniting them with their families. It also urged the government to be cautious in the release of security-related information to the public.
CAN reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with government and relevant stakeholders to promote peace, unity and stability across Oyo State.
