Obi defected to save his political career, says Prof Ikechukwu

The Executive Director of Development Specs Academy, Prof Okey Ikechukwu, has described the defection of former presidential candidate Peter Obi from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) as a move driven by political survival.
Ikechukwu made the remark on Tuesday during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show, where he also referenced similar political realignments involving former NNPP presidential candidate, Rabi’u Kwankwaso.
He said Obi’s movement was a form of “strategic porting” within Nigeria’s evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
“Peter Obi simply ran for his political life. A woman who is running from a lion does not do catwalk. That is where Peter Obi has found himself,” he said.
According to him, Obi’s new political platform was unexpected and could reshape the dynamics of the 2027 general elections by strengthening electoral competition.
He added that the development would force other major political parties, including the APC, to reassess their strategies, noting that the opposition risked becoming fragmented.
“Now those who have to recalibrate are APC and the other parties. Scenarios can be examined because the argument is now on the table. The opposition is splitting itself thin,” he said.
